Extended hours: The Health Promotions Aerobics and Skating Center extended its hours for the summer. Come out to the center, Building 324 on 37th Street, now open for open skate, every Tuesday through Friday. The skate center is open from 2 to 5 p.m. For $5, get in the door and spend the day at the rink. Call (254) 287-5623.

Casey Memorial Library Summer Reading Program: Activities for ages pre-k to 17 from 9 to 10 a.m. This week’s theme is North America.

Saturday

UFC 162 Watch Party: Silva vs. Weidman: Watch the UFC Middleweight Championship bout between long time titleholder Anderson Silva and top contender Chris Weidman on Backbone NCO Lounge’s 14 42-inch flat-panel TVs, enjoy monthly drink specials and munch on free finger foods while supplies last. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the event is free and open to everyone 18 or older. The lounge is at Building 194 on 37th Street, adjoined to the Phantom Warrior Center. Call (254) 532-5073.

Movie Matinee: Watch “Aristocats” at the Casey Memorial Library from 2 to 4 p.m. Popcorn and a beverage are provided in room 156 in the library annex.

Tuesday

The Book Club will meet from noon to 1 p.m. to discuss “An Invisible Thread” by Laura Schroff in Room 160 of the Casey Memorial Library, Building 3202 on 72nd Street and 761st Tank Battalion Avenue. Copies of the book are available at the reference desk. Bring a lunch. For more information, call (254) 287-2716.

Day 1: On the ground in South Korea with Ironhorse soldiers

After 20 hours of travel, by plane and bus, I finally made it to Camp Casey, South Korea with the remainder of Fort Hood’s 1st Brigade Combat Team soldiers. For the next several days, I will be following the mission and daily lives of Ironhorse troopers as they begin a nine-month rotation in the land of the morning calm.
