Scholarship program: The Central Texas-Fort Hood Chapter of the Association of the United States Army’s 2017 scholarship program is now open and applications are currently being accepted. AUSA awards nearly $40,000 in scholarships each year to AUSA members and their dependents.
According to Stephanie O’Banion, local chapter president, the chapter uses a network of local volunteers to solicit area businesses and individuals to raise scholarship support for students from military families. The team of volunteers raise the funds, receive scholarship applications, evaluate and rank the applications, and coordinate a scholarship luncheon each year to award the scholarships.
In order to qualify, interested applicants need to complete the application, write a qualifying essay and submit their packet prior to the application deadline on May 1. The application information can be downloaded from the association’s website at www.forthoodausa.org.
Church of Christ: Youngsport Church of Christ in Killeen will host “A Conversation About PTSD and TBI” with U.S. Army Col. Rickie N. Hagan at 7 p.m. each evening through the four-day period. Hagan is a 37-year career soldier who has served in the National Guard, Army Reserves and on active duty. He began his career as an enlisted field artillery crewman.

MOAA Meeting: Military Officers Association of America will meet at 11:15 a.m. April 21 at the Shilo Inn Restaurant, 3701 South WS Young Drive, Killeen. The lunch is $15, plus another $5 cover for the cost of the room. The meeting’s program will include guest speaker Lt. Gen. Paul Funk II, III Corps and Fort Hood commander. Active-duty and retired officers, including warrant officers, of all services and Reserves are welcome. Reservations for the meeting are required. Soldier Appreciation Day: Domino’s Pizza Copperas Cove will hold its 12th annual Soldier Appreciation Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 23. The free event is open to all military identification card holders, including active duty, reserve component, retirees and spouses.
Lance Wade Thomas will provide live music and there will be games for the entire family, face painting, balloon animals and more. Each ID card holder will be able to build their own free medium pizza, with any — and as much — toppings as personally desired.

Metropolitan Ballet: The Texas Metropolitan Ballet will hold a Suite Classical Gatherings exhibition of the Coppelia Suite, Chopiniana Suite and New Works at the Killeen Arts and Activities Center. The majority of the dancers are children of active duty service members. The performances will be at 7 p.m. May 13 and 2 p.m. May 14.

Annual reunion: The 1st Cavalry Division Association 70th annual reunion is scheduled for June 7-11 in Killeen. Please register early to assist in coordinating the reunion. Some events will have limited seating available due to the size of available rooms. All members of the Association must register and pay the registration fee in order to attend. Early registration is from December 2016 to April 21, 2017. The fee is $20 for all members except those on active duty. Active Duty troopers pay $10 to register. Registrations post-marked after April 21, 2017, must pay late registration fee of $40. Family members attending with an Association member, widows of 1st Cavalry Division troopers and Gold Star family members do not have to pay a registration fee.

Drivers needed: The Central Texas Veterans Health Care System is seeking volunteer van drivers interested in transporting Veterans in the Killeen area to and from their scheduled appointments at the Olin E. Teague Veterans’ Medical Center in Temple. Transportation for veterans from outlying areas, such as Killeen, is provided through a van fleet donated in collaboration with area Disabled American Veterans organizations and its members. Personnally-owned vehicles are not used to transport veterans. Volunteers must meet qualifications for drivers, such as a valid driver’s license, proof of current insurance, a safe driving record and a background check. Applicants must also pass a physical examination. Volunteers are eligible for meals, flu shots and an extensive volunteer recognition program. Dental program: The Fort Hood American Red Cross and Fort Hood Dental Command announce applications will be available March 1 for the 2017 Dental Assistant training program. Dental Command trains Red Cross volunteers in the basic skills necessary to work as a dental assistant. The training program runs from September 2017 to May 2018. Individuals must submit their application no later than April 28. Bingo: The Community Events and Bingo Center offers bingo six days a week, reoccurring special events, along with computer handsets, display monitors and several stations to replenish bingo supplies. Over $3,700 in cash prizes paid out daily. One jackpot starts at $10,000, another at $3,000 and another begins with a percent of the first day’s play; in addition to progressive game numbers that go up weekly. This state of the art facility is also capable of accommodating private parties and functions of up to 450 guests. Roller Derby Recreation League: Come out and join the Fort Hood Hell on Wheels All Girl Roller Derby Recreation League. The league is free to join and is open to female DOD ID card holders ages 16 years old and older. Females under the age of 18 must have a legal guardian present at all times. Skaters are required to provide their own equipment, during league practice and bouts. The league meets Monday and Wednesday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Health Promotions Aerobics and Skating Center, Building 324 on 37th Street. All skill levels will be accommodated. Counseling: Bring it in the Zone is now hosting SMART Recovery Group/Individual Counseling Sessions in Killeen. This is a cognitive behavioral approach to therapy helping individuals become free from dependence of any substance using a four-point program.
