Harker Heights will check off several capital improvement projects in the new year.

Council members voted Dec. 10 to authorize publicizing a notice of intention to issue a combination tax and revenue certificated of obligation for projects city officials deemed advantageous.

Alberta Barrett, finance director, said the notice of intent is for city projects, which include expanding City Hall, widening and adding a left-turn lane and signal lights on Farm-to-Market 3481, reconstructing Comanche Gap Road and Amy and Pecan drives, upgrading the Cedar Knob pump station and Warrior’s Path lift station and additional water and sewer improvements.

On Nov. 26, city officials whittled down a list of more than $33 million in capital improvement projects to a list with a more manageable $9 million price tag.

Several residents addressed the council regarding their concerns about making sure funds go into improving Comanche Gap Road.

“Comanche Gap Road is the worst traveled road in Harker Heights,” said longtime resident Frank Roberts.

He built his home on Eagle Ridge is 1965 and has since seen the road to his home deteriorate.

“Why are we building million dollar houses along crappy roads?” Eagle Ridge resident Kurt Bailey asked. “This road needs to be fixed. There are thousands of people who live back here and travel this road daily, like my 16-year-old, and our cars are getting all messed up because of the condition the road is in.”

Mayor Mike Aycock addressed the concerned residents by saying the council’s goal is to completely fund all the projects but they won’t know how much they have to spend on each item until they are put out for bid.
