Most sports fans may be familiar with Ben Hogan as a man who won numerous trophies and changed the game of golf forever, but Lisa Scott knows another aspect of the man.
She knew him as a great uncle who always had a strong, yet silent sense of patriotism and love of being an American.
As president of the Ben Hogan Foundation, Scott continues her great uncle’s work, which brought her to Fort Hood on Friday for the Ben Hogan Classic presented by PepsiCo.
“He only bought American, he drove Cadillacs the rest of his life,” Scott said. “He was extremely made in America, pro-military. It was important to him, and he’s very proud of his country and the servicemen.”
Two hundred soldiers, family members, retirees and Defense Department civilians registered for the event, which was won by the team of Craig Hart, Rusty Lippert, Shawn Middlebrook and Jake Morton.
Scott said her uncle made sure to instill in the Hogan youth a sense of pride and patriotism.
“Soldiers, military; he was very supportive of that so when we do things for the foundation, we try to do something that we know either he would have done or support his values,” Scott said. “This is definitely No. 1.”
The foundation hosted the event that also included a junior golf clinic for future PGA money leaders.
For Spc. Clayton Vroon, 24, the event was a way to relax, enjoy a cloudy, but pleasant, afternoon before moving to Hawaii for a permanent change of station.
“This place is great, I really enjoyed myself,” said Vroon, with 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division.
