Harker Heights cleared 302 warrants during a two-week warrant roundup that began July 29 and ended Aug. 12.

"The first day we started, we cleared 146 (warrants)," said Julie Helsham, administrator for the municipal court.

She said this was the city's second roundup. It extended the roundup from one day last year to two weeks.

Last year, Helsham said, the municipal court cleared 140 warrants. On average, the court clears about 22 warrants daily, she added.

Helsham said the city has thousands of active warrants. Warrant violations for the roundup included all Class C misdemeanors, including traffic violations, and code enforcement and animal-related violations.

Police Lt. Loretta Fox said officers were given a list of active warrants by the municipal court before the roundup that designated those who needed to be contacted.

"They (then) went door-to-door, to work places and everything," Fox said.

Helsham said the judge saw walk-ins as they came in and "were able to take care of everything."

Residents who were arrested during this time were brought in to face the judge, she said.

Helsham said the court plans to keep future roundups at two weeks.
