Despite a gloomy economy, the Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce has seen at least 65 new businesses join the organization within the past year.

"It's like a cycle," chamber president Bill Kozlik said. "You gain, you lose, you gain, you lose.

"This is a time where I would say our chamber and our members work together as a team."

Kozlik said the chamber is constantly working with the city to ensure membership of new businesses coming into the area.

"What we do is we work with the city," he said. "When their permits are issued, we keep a copy."

This allows the chamber to seek out membership in a fast and efficient way.

Kozlik said one of the biggest areas of growth for the chamber during the past year has been in the Market Heights shopping area.

"We see growth there," Kozlik said, "Razoo's is doing absolutely wonderful."

Construction of Seton Medical Center along U.S. Highway 190 has impacted the chamber. Kozlik said the chamber has "seen growth in a different manner" there, with professionals including doctors brought to the area.

"Seton is really helping," he said.

Other ways in which the chamber continues to flourish is by hosting events, such as the golf tournament held in June at the Stonetree Golf Course in Killeen.

"It was more than successful, and more than we could ever anticipate," Kozlik said.

On Sept. 10 the chamber will host its annual Central Texas Food and Wine Festival at Harker Heights Community Park.

Kozlik said he believes the event draws businesses to the city and is a good way of advertising for them, too.

"It's something that everybody gets excited about," Kozlik said. "And it brings people to the community."
