The city's 50th anniversary celebration Saturday at Dana Peak Park was a success, according to Harker Heights Parks and Recreation.

"I think it highlighted the city's progress, and I think the people had a good time," Parks and Recreation Director Jerry Bark said Monday.

About 3,200 people showed up to the event, Bark said.

Bill Webb, who left the city 31 years ago, made his way back for the city's celebration, traveling about 75 miles from Kosse.

Webb was shocked to see Harker Heights was no longer a "blink of a city," he said. He could barely recognize anything, but he appreciated the change.

People had plenty to do during the celebration with bounce houses, a giant carnival-style slide, a fishing tank, helicopter displays, food vendors, live music, fireworks and more.

"It was a good event," Bark said. "People were all very active."

City council members, such as Spencer Smith, said they believed the event was a good use of the city funds to celebrate and promote the city.

"I think this shows our city really well," Smith said.

"My fun meter is pegged."
