Corby Vinson and Marcie Vinson parked their lounge chairs at the edge of Stillhouse Hollow Lake as the waves crashed against their legs and they wiggled their toes in the sand.
The Copperas Cove couple didn't let the damp weather stop them from rounding off their weekend with outdoor time at Dana Peak Park.
Killeen received 1.4 inches of rain Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
"We were driving down and it was raining, but we didn't let it stop us," Marcie said. "We're going to stick it out."
The couple learned about the park two years ago after a friend moved down the road from it and have been coming at least twice a month during the summer ever since.
It's their favorite outdoor weekend getaway since there typically aren't big crowds.
"It's my first weekend off in a month, so I wanted to enjoy it," Corby said. "You can swim just about anywhere and it's just a beautiful area."
The couple introduced their friend, Denise Lord, of Copperas Cove, to the park. Lord was most excited about the sand and brought buckets for her children to make sand castles.
After growing up the about a block from Lake Michigan, Lord said she and her nine siblings would walk to the beach every single day.
"It was nice to get (to Dana Peak Park) and see the sand," she said. "We went to the other areas of the lake and it's just rocks, no sand. It's awful."
Her son, William Lord, 16, enjoyed the introduction to the lake and looks forward to spending the rest of his summer break visiting it.
"This lake is a lot better because it's nicer and not that many people know about it," he said. "I enjoy the scenery."
The Vinsons look forward to making more memories at the lake.
"We come here all the time," Corby said. "It's always a nice time every time we come."
Marilyn Cadle, of Killeen, spent the entire weekend at the lake with her children and about 15 friends.
They exhausted their weekend away from cellphones, video games and other electronics by jet skiing, tubing, huddling around a campfire roasting marshmallows and making S'mores and going swimming and fishing.
"We usually go to the beach and camp at least twice a summer," she said.
