From staff reports

A Fort Hood soldier, Sgt. Timothy Robert Stephens, died from injuries sustained after his truck hit a tree Saturday in Harker Heights.

During a routine patrol about 2:06 a.m., police officers noticed Stephens speeding in a pickup truck in the 300 block of Indian Trail.

An officer followed and tried to stop Stephens. Although he appeared to stop, he accelerated and jumped a curb, striking a residential mailbox as he fled west to Amy Lane, according to police.

After turning on East Robin, Stephen's truck left the roadway and struck a tree about 2:07 a.m., according to police reports. Upon impact, the fuel tank of the truck was punctured and created a fire, which was quickly extinguished.

Stephens was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead about 3 a.m. by Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin, who ordered an autopsy.

Stephens, whose home of record is McMinnville, Ore., entered active-duty service in October 2004. He arrived at Fort Hood in March 2006 and was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, since October 2005, according to Fort Hood officials.
