HARKER HEIGHTS — The old adage of one man’s trash being another man’s treasure rang true for Heights resident Douglas Henderson on Saturday morning.

Henderson made out pretty well during Prospector Storage’s second annual multiunit garage sale for tenants and nonprofits, where he picked up some beer signs, a comforter set, several dress shirts and a jacket for a total of $50. “I got some deals you wouldn’t normally find,” he said.

Dozens of cars, filled with prospective bargain hunters, lined the street Saturday and more than 22 tenants were ready to get rid of their wares.

“I’ve had my unit for about seven years and it’s about time I got rid of some of this stuff,” said Roger Blackwell, of Copperas Cove, who was selling everything from household items to clothes. “This gave me an opportunity to clear out my storage unit and give back to the community.”

Prospector Storage owner Lisa Parker said the event helps tenants declutter their homes or storage units and raises money for local nonprofits.

Last year the Memorial Student Ministries youth group from Memorial Baptist Church in Killeen raised more than $1,200. This year, church member Rachael Laviemoniere said she hopes the group will exceed that number so the church can send more kids to the Student Life Summer Camp in San Angelo.

“The first year I went was an amazing experience, and I want other kids to be able to have the same experience,” said Dameon Nelms, 17, about why he opted to spend his morning volunteering with his church.

The garage sale consisted of more than buying and selling, with several vendors setting up shop inside and outside.

Attendees enjoyed the Jump Around bounce house, snow cones from Central Texas Orthodontics, Big Hills Mobile Detailing services, music from The Party Mixer DJ and the TapTap Art School bus.
