Rob Robinson presided over his first Harker Heights City Council meeting Tuesday in his new role as acting mayor. His first official action was reading a proclamation declaring Feb. 16-22 as “National Engineers Week.”

In other council business, council members heard a presentation from Larry Robison, chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission.

“The P and Z had a successful year in 2013 with the improved economic climate,” he said.

“The opportunity to begin looking toward changes in the way we do business, to improving our quality of life and enhancing our overall citywide aesthetic appeal, presents us with a full plate of activity in the upcoming year, and we look forward to contributing.”

Robison said the council’s vision and adoption of the Knight’s Way Corridor Overlay District will guide the commission’s actions and prepare the city for growth. In 2013, the commission assisted city staff in the development and landscape requirements and special studies throughout the community. Robison said they have been working on and will continue to work on enhancing the community’s appeal to new businesses and residents alike and will continue to ensure consistent applications of development regulations.

“Our goals for 2014 are to examine and recommend possible areas and corridors for additional design standards and overlay districts,” he said. “We will study signage and screening options that will focus on improved aesthetics, public safety and residential compatibility.”

The commission will also discuss and recommend land-use strategies that enhance community involvement and plan to develop a “Multi-Modal Thoroughfare” plan. In 2013, the commission received 40 subdivision requests, 16 zoning-change requests and one conditional-use permit request.
