Born in 1961 and raised here, Randy Sutton has seen Harker Heights transition from a pig farm to the bustling and growing city it is today.

Sutton, the president of the First State Bank Central Texas in Harker Heights for the past 10 years, was named the sixth recipient of the Kern-Cox Founders Award during the Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce’s 25th annual Awards Banquet & Celebration on Oct. 28.

“I can tell you this, I don’t deserve this, but I really appreciate the honor,” said Sutton, adding he’s not a “big hoopla kind of guy.”

“There are lot of others who are more deserving of this award than I am, but I will continue to work hard for this community as long as I am here.”

Named for city founders Pinckney R. Cox and Harley Kern, the annual award is given to a resident who has made substantial contributions to Harker Heights’ development.

“The reason he was chosen is because he has done so much for the area and he’s very giving of his time,” said Chamber President Bill Kozlik about Sutton’s famous fish fries and his work with the Association of the U.S. Army’s annual local golf tournament. “He’s always out and about in the community and always willing to help out however he can.”

Before making his way on stage to claim his plaque, a video about Sutton played for guests and said he “made Harker Heights into the bright star of Central Texas.”

“It was an emotional video to watch,” he said. “Being born and raised here I want to continue to nurture and watch this area continue to grow. There are a lot of awesome things happening here that’s only going to make this place better and bigger.”
