Jackpot Saloon

Shelly Eagen sets up a pool shot during league play at Jackpot Saloon Tuesday night.

Editor's Note: This is the first in a series of articles featuring Harker Heights night life.

I started my night on the town about 9 p.m. Saturday, when I made my way to the Harker Heights Plaza on Edwards Drive to a place dubbed the “premier sports bar of Central Texas.”

Jackpot Saloon sits in the middle of a strip mall and has been operating for six years, said bar manager Sam Shaffer.

This was the first time I had the chance to visit and take in what the bar had to offer. Shaffer said the owner, Brittany Williams, operated bingo halls and bars separately for many years and decided to combine the attractions in Harker Heights.

I took a seat at the bar, and no matter what direction I faced, there was a 42-inch flat screen showing sports. It’s an athlete’s paradise.

Shaffer said the saloon also attracts a large crowd to watch UFC and boxing events.

The environment was friendly, as I heard bartenders and customers exchanging stories. Besides drinks, the menu includes burgers, fries, chicken gizzards and wings — “bar food” as Shaffer called it.

As I waited for my food, I watched people shoot pool and noticed others playing electronic gaming machines on the opposite end of the building.

The machines seemed to be a crowd favorite, as all the chairs were full.

Shaffer said a big attraction at Jackpot Saloon is Buzztime Trivia.

“It’s an electronic game played against everyone in the nation,” he said. So it’s basically a Web-based interactive game that tests how smart someone is. “Jackpot Saloon is No. 1 for wild card trivia for our region, which includes Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana.”

Shaffer said the establishment is often busy, and residents can expect a fun time playing bingo during the day and pool throughout the week and dancing to the music of DJ Tyme on Friday nights.

“It’s a comfortable, relaxing and non-violent establishment,” he said. “We have a drinking policy. We will make sure you get home safe and we don’t serve anybody after a certain point, and we do everything we can to take care of our customers.”

I walked out of the business with the mindset that Jackpot Saloon is a place where I can enjoy a cold refreshing beverage, good food and entertainment without having to burn a deep hole in my wallet.
