HARKER HEIGHTS — After months of speculation, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. confirmed Friday that Sam’s Club is coming to town.
“We did purchase the land to put a Sam’s Club in Harker Heights,” Wal-Mart Director of Public Affairs Kellie Duhr said.
Construction on the 136,000-square-foot building will begin in early 2013 at the corner of West Central Texas Expressway and Memory Lane, south of U.S. Highway 190 in Harker Heights. The membership-only retail wholesale club is tentatively set to open in late fall, Duhr said.
“It usually takes about nine months to complete the project,” she said.
Upon completion, Sam’s Club will create 175 local full- and part-time jobs. A hiring center will probably go up about four months before the store opens, Duhr said.
“That’s usually what they do when a Walmart Supercenter is built, so they will probably do the same (for Sam’s Club).”
City Manager Steve Carpenter said Friday that no building permits had been issued for the project, but he has met with architects and engineers representing Wal-Mart.
“The property has been purchased and I have seen some building plans. We’re going over that with them and talking about the various aspects of the property,” he said.
Carpenter said he thinks the Harker Heights location is perfect, especially with more than 200,000 people living between Copperas Cove and Belton.
“We’re right in the middle. I think it will really do well there,” he said. “I think it will be important to us because it will bring a lot of people to the area who will not only shop at Sam’s but might go to other stores as well. So we’re excited.”
