Custom-blend smoothies with pure fruit juices and nutritional supplements now can be savored in Harker Heights.

Smoothie King officially opened Thursday.

Franchise owner Alexandra Myers, who is also opening a Smoothie King at the new post exchange location at Fort Hood, is excited to bring the company to the area.

“There’s a significant population that doesn’t necessarily have access to get on post or won’t go there for something like a grab and go smoothie,” Myers said. “But I think it’s still the same reasons to keep what people want off post as well, which is a healthier option to fast food and trying to meet their fitness or nutrition goals.

Originally from New Orleans, where Smoothie King originated, Myers missed the option when she attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.

When moving to California for the Navy, she, too, was disappointed that other smoothie places didn’t compare.

“With me being in the Navy, I did see there were necessarily a lot of healthy options in terms of food, and you’re busy all the time always on the go,” Myers said. “So that was part of why I brought it to military bases is to try to offer that healthier options and why I kind of got into this particular brand.”

After five years of active duty, she obtained her master’s degree in business and decided to become an entrepreneur. She’s since opened Smoothie King at eight military bases across the U.S.

When looking at the location at Fort Hood, she also looked at real estate in the Killeen area, before deciding on Harker Heights.

“This is actually my first drive-thru location that I’ve had,” Myers said. “So looking forward to jumping into that and seeing how it works.”

Smoothie King is a franchise offering healthy retail products, including sports beverages, energy bars and vitamin supplements while creating “smoothies with a purpose,” according to the company’s website.

“We’re always trying to meet people’s fitness goals,” Myers said. “We do have smoothies — for example, the hulk which is more of a weight gain smoothie — for people having trouble keeping weight on. We also have our slim blends for people trying to lose weight or achieve their fitness goals — whether it’s looking for extra vitamins, protein or fiber.”

Vitamins, protein powder, mixed nuts, raw bars, kale chips and other healthy snack items can be found in addition to the smoothies.

The Harker Heights location is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

It is located in the Synergy plaza off the Indian Trail exit at 560 E. Central Texas Expressway Suite 101 in Harker Heights.

    Congratulations to Smoothie King...

Harker Heights could use a Baskin Robbins and a Pei Wei...

Oh, and a Kendra Scott's jewelry store.
