NOLANVILLE — Cavazos Elementary School will hold its first “Hoedown Showdown” chili cook-off and auction at the annual spring carnival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Money raised benefits a variety of programs at the school, including arts, physical education, technology and outdoor education. It also will help purchase a cover for the playground.
“Bring your best chili to the carnival and be voted ‘Best Chili in Nolanville,’” said Angel Cotto, a computer tech teacher at the school. “Nolanville officials will be the judges and we will give out trophies for first, second and third place.”
The chili-tasting contest is open to the community. Entries are $10 for individuals and $25 for businesses.
“It’s still chili weather out here since it’s been so chilly lately,” he said. “People really like to eat chili here, and I thought it would go over well to turn it into a contest.”
Chili makers can sign up online at www.recavazospto.org or at the carnival.
Amy Salas, PTO president, said the carnival will feature a ‘Cyber Spin,” ride, games, bounce houses and an inflatable jousting arena.
Tickets will be 25 cents each and hamburgers, hot dogs and hot links will be sold at the concession area.
