First Baptist Church of Harker Heights teamed up with Harker Heights United Methodist and Trinity Baptist churches to host the Harker Heights Food Care Center Fall Festival fundraiser.

The festival is from 1 to 5 p.m. Oct. 19 at Carl Levin Park in Harker Heights and open to the community. The admission fee is donations for the food care center, Director Linda Dawson said.

“We’re asking everybody that comes in to bring two canned goods or two nonperishable dry items like rice, beans or macaroni,” she said. “Or if they don’t have food they can make a monetary donation instead.”

The festival will feature bingo, a chili cook-off, face painting, bounce houses, rock climbing, local performers and a DJ. Food and drinks will be sold at concession stands.

Representatives from Target, H-E-B and the Heights fire and police departments will be on hand.

“We’ve had a really good response from the local police and fire and local businesses supporting this,” said Lori Ford, event coordinator. “We’re hoping for a great turnout.”

Ford, a food care center volunteer, said the community has to be involved to help everyone in need.

“We always run out of food (at the center) by the end of Saturday morning and it’s a lot of certain types of food,” she said. “This is our food shelter and these are our neighbors that are hungry so we have a great need to fill our shelves.”

Dawson hopes the event will not only elicit donations but also awareness for the center that helps feed thousands of families each month, she said.

“I think it will bring the community together and give them more awareness because there are still a lot of people in Harker Heights that don’t even know there is a food bank here.”

Nearly 1,000 people are expected to attend the festival, Ford said.

Carl Levin Park is at 400 Miller’s Crossing, Harker Heights. Call Dawson at 254-813-5333.
