David Christopher Wiley

David Christopher Wiley, 41, teaches English and is the head volleyball coach at Harker Heights High School. He lives in McGregor with his family.

Where are you from?

What brought you to Harker Heights?

I was coaching in Bruceville-Eddy as a volleyball coach. I knew the former coach here. I knew what kind of program she ran and that it was a good school to work for. So when the job came up, I saw the opportunity and I jumped on it.

What do you enjoy most about working in Heights?

I like the community and the town involvement in the school. The school itself is big and it also has a community feel to it. Working with all the teachers and administrators and coaches here is a pleasure everyday because everybody gets along really well. It feels like a family environment; it’s just a nice place to be.

What inspired you to get into your line of work?

I always enjoyed sports and the strategy of it. No matter what sport I was playing I enjoyed figuring out what was going on. When it all came down to it, in the long run I knew that coaching was what I wanted to do.

How long have you been coaching?

This is my 14th year.

Are you involved in any community activities, organizations or clubs?

I work with Pure Energy Volleyball Club as an advisor. I’m in a men’s group at my local church, First Baptist Church of McGregor, and I’ve worked some with the youth group as well.

Tell me about your family.

My wife’s name is Charly and I have two kids — a 9-year-old son named Noah and a 2-year-old daughter named Paizlee.

What or who is an inspiration to you?

My wife Charly — she works very hard not only at her job but also with everything she does for the family. She keeps our family running completely. She gives me the ability to be able to do the job that I love to do the way I need to do it. I see what she does and I fall in love with her a little bit more every day.

What is your favorite vacation spot and why?

I’ve never been there but I’ve always wanted to go to Bora Bora. I’m a really beach-type person, those are the vacations I enjoy the most: Just relaxing. So it’s always been a dream to go to Bora Bora.

What was the last movie you saw? Favorite TV show?

The last movie I saw was “The Hangover 3.” It was a very funny movie and I’ve seen all of them. My favorite TV show is “The Big Bang Theory.” It’s something that you don’t have to think about a lot and get a good laugh out of.

What was the best advice you were ever given? Who gave it to you?

I had an agriculture teacher in high school named Doug Roman and he told me one day, “Whatever you’re gonna do make sure you love it, because you’re gonna do it for the rest of your life.”

If you could change one thing about your life, what would that be and why?

Just the fact of how long it took me to get into coaching. I knew I always wanted to coach but I explored a couple of different avenues before that. So I probably would’ve gotten into coaching a little younger.
