Antonesha Lockett, 21, is a student at Central Texas College and works full time in the Guest Services and the Photo Department at Target in Harker Heights. She is also a 2010 graduate of Harker Heights High School.

What do you enjoy about working in Harker Heights?

I enjoy that it is not far from home, and it doesn’t take long to get to work.

How did you end up in this area?

I came here with my mother in 2003, because she was in the military and got stationed at Fort Hood.

Tell me about your family.

I have a little sister named Aliyah Lockett, she is a very talented eighth grader. Aliyah plays basketball and volleyball. I have an amazing mother who is a retired veteran from the Army. She currently works at the VA hospital in Temple. My mother’s side of the family is from Tuscaloosa, Ala., for all you “Roll Tide” fans! My dad’s family is from Ohio. I am a military brat and was born in Nuremberg, Germany.

What are you studying in school?

I plan on becoming a physical therapist. I am going to get my associate’s degree at Central Texas College then transfer to another school. I am not sure as of yet what school I will attend after graduating in spring of 2014.

What kind of community work do you do?

I coach the step team at Liberty Hill Middle School. I went to a local stepping competition and I saw a Liberty Hill school counselor and asked her what happened to Liberty Hill’s stepping team. Apparently there wasn’t anyone to coach it anymore, so I offered to do it. I have been coaching the step team since second semester of 2012. I really enjoy stepping. I believe that every child needs an outlet. The kids that I coach are like my little brothers and sisters. Whenever any of the kids on my step team need me, I am there.

What is your favorite vacation spot and why?

My favorite vacation spot would be a cruise to Jamaica and the Bahamas. I went on this cruise with my family when I was in middle school. I enjoy traveling and vacationing. This vacation spot is my favorite because I was with my family.

What do you miss most about being a kid?

I miss being more involved. I was on the step team, playing volleyball, singing in the choir, and performing all at the same time when I was in grade school. I don’t get to do all those things now as an adult. I don’t have as much time because of work and school. I get to coach the step team, so it allows me to be a part of one of my passions. The college I attend now does not offer the other activities that I used to do.

If you could change one thing about your life what would it be and why?

I would have gone away to college instead of going to college locally. The stress of being a full time student and having a full time job didn’t fit me very well so I had to cut my class schedule, which makes me graduate later than expected.

What is the best advice you were given?

The best advice that I was ever given was from my mother. My mom is a very motivating person, she never gives up. My mother advised me to, “Never give up, as long as you get to where you need to be that’s all that matters.” My mother keeps going until she finishes whatever she starts. I am so driven; I believe that I get that from her.
