Texas-born country music sensation Curtis Grimes, 27, is making a tour stop in Harker Heights on Saturday to perform at the Whiskey Creek Saloon.

Grimes, a native of Gilmer, will put on a 90-minute show beginning at 7 p.m. featuring several songs from his new album and a few others.

“We’ll throw in a couple of those new ones and some of our radio hits and mix in a few covers that we hope most of the people will know,” Grimes said.

Saturday’s show will be Grime’s second time playing at the Whiskey Creek Saloon.

Music was not always Grimes’ dream; he played baseball for many years and even had a scholarship to Texas State University – San Marcos before moving to the Austin area to pursue his music career.

“I didn’t grow up into music or singing or anything like that,” he said.

His group’s first big break came after winning a local radio contest to open for country music star Kenny Chesney.

A couple of years later Grimes landed a spot on the first season of the hit NBC show “The Voice.”

“That got me a blast nationally and got me some exposure outside of the markets we were playing in. It opened the door for us,” he said,

Grimes also appeared on season three of the docu-reality TV show “Troubadour, TX,” chronicling his life on the road.

Compared to other states, Grimes said, the Texas music scene is more advanced because of its strong fan base and industry connections.

“You don’t hear about guys in other parts of the U.S. that can tour in the state and make a living out of it and not have to go on from that,” he said. “The Texas scene was a platform for me, as someone that didn’t even grow up doing music, to turn what started off as a hobby into a career. You can’t do that in any other state.”

Grimes also garnered national sponsorships with Justin Boots, Cinch and Southern Thread Clothing.

Tickets for Saturday’s show are $8. You must be 18 or older to attend. For tickets, call the Whiskey Creek Saloon at 254-200-9205. The saloon is at 171 Farm-to-Market 3219, Harker Heights.
