Lisa Youngblood, director of the Stewart C. Meyer Harker Heights Public Library, stood before a crowd of children Nov. 21 and asked, “Who’s ready to read?”

And so the library’s Family Fun Night began with a story time. Children ranging in age from 1 to 10 years old all gathered around to hear the story. Some were dressed like story book characters, including Little Red Riding Hood, Pinkalicious, Elmo and various princesses.

Family Fun Night was part of the library’s week ong celebration of Children’s Book Week.

The story time included visual aids and children acting out parts of the story Youngblood read to them.

“We are showing the many different methods of storytelling,” said Amanda Hairston, children’s librarian.

Bonnie Hanchey, mother of two, said she comes to the library often with her children.

“I have enjoyed watching them grow up in these programs and I like that there is something for children of all ages,” she said.

Families also enjoyed snacks, drinks and related crafts.

At the end of the evening, every child was able to take home a free book. The Children’s Book Week events were made possible by grants from the Texas Library and Archives Commission, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and contributions from the Friends of the Library.

Youngblood said the events are “educational opportunities that will look like fun and games to the kids because reading is fun.”

As the library wrapped up Children’s Book Week, librarians reminded families and educators that many free educational resources are available at the Harker Heights library. For more information, visit the library at 400 Indian Trail or go to www.ci.harker-heights.tx.us/library.
