Heather Cox, activities coordinator for the Harker Heights Parks and Recreation Department, was the guest speaker at the Sept. 12 regular meeting of the Heights Rotary Club.

For the past four years, Cox has coordinated volunteers for the department and operated the Activities Center and farmers market. She also oversees the regular and adaptive athletic departments.

There are currently 300 people who volunteer as coaches in the athletic programs, Cox said.

One of the biggest projects each year is the Halloween Hoopla, slated for Oct. 31 at Carl Levin Park.

“If you’d like to volunteer for this event please RSVP by Oct. 14,” she said.

About 3,000 families usually attend the event for games, candy and dressing up in costumes. “It’s a fun time for people to come out from the community, to get to know each other and celebrate a holiday,” Cox said.

Last year, more than 50 volunteers assisted with the extravaganza, for a combined 151 service hours.

The city is sponsoring a Volunteer Drive from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Activities Center. To become a volunteer, fill out a team member packet at www.ci.harker-heights.tx.us/parks.

“All ages can volunteer. If you’re 12 and under, however, you must have an adult present,” Cox said.

Once the team member packet has been completed and individuals pass a background check, Cox will notify them. “We think the background check is an extremely important part of the process because we want the children who participate in our activities to be safe,” she said.
