The Harker Heights High School Red Brigade Band Boosters is hosting the Band on the Run 5K fundraiser Nov. 16 to fund expenses for the band’s new equipment trailer.
Kristl Evans, fundraiser chairwoman for the booster board, came up with the idea as a way to help boost the band’s confidence.
“When we would go to events all the other school bands would drive up in their brand new semis and we had to rent a box truck,” she said. “It became something the kids really wanted, so we made a decision that we were going to get it done.”
Through various donations and fundraisers, the Heights band board members were able to purchase a $5,600 semi for next year.
To maintain and customize the outside of the bus, however, costs another $9,000.
Evans said the school district’s and the community’s support for fine arts departments is often lacking.
“These kids give up a lot of time, but I think sometimes they get overshadowed,” she said. “The only way that we can grow the band is to have a program that’s good and fun for the kids.”
As of Wednesday, 80 racers were pre-registered but Evans expects double that amount on the day of the event.
The run starts at 8 a.m. at the Harker Heights High School, 1001 E. Farm-to-Market 2410. The top three male and female racers in each group will receive an award. All participants will receive a T-shirt and goody bags. Refreshments will also be available for racers.
The registration fee is $25 for adults and $10 for children ages 5-11.
Racers can register on-site on the day of the race from 7 to 7:30 a.m. followed by an 8 a.m. start time.
Registration for a Kids Run will be from 8 to 8:30 a.m., with the race beginning at 9 a.m.
