The Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Harker Heights Police Department, is hosting two classes about Civilian Response to Active Shooting Events.

The classes are scheduled for Wednesday at the Library Activities Center, 400 Indian Trail. The first class is from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The second class is from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Admission is free.

The instructor of the classes will be Lt. Houston Johnson, commander of the Harker Heights Police Department Criminal Investigation Division.

According to Johnson, the classes will be divided into three sections: Disaster Response Psychology (how humans respond to disasters), Active Shooter Events and What Should the Civilian Response be to an Active Shooter Event.

“The training is very video intensive with large amounts of statistics but it really has to do with the disaster psychology component and what a person needs to be thinking about if they find themselves in one of these active shooter events,” Johnson said.
