Isaac Orozco, 31, and his family built and operate Juego Bonito, an indoor soccer arena in Harker Heights. He has a 2½-year-old daughter, Ariel, and has lived in Harker Heights for seven years.
Where are you from?
I am originally from Long Beach, Calif.
What brought your family to Texas?
The military brought me here as a duty station. After I got out, I moved back home to California, I was inquired by my family about Texas. I told them to take a look (laughs). They enjoyed the weather, as well as the cost of living. So they stayed. I joined them with my girlfriend at the time and moved back.
What does Juego Bonito mean?
Literally, in Portuguese it means to “play beautifully.” It’s a well-known term for those that really follow soccer.
What influenced you to build Juego Bonito?
Well, I like playing the sport of soccer. We used to play at Lions (Club) Park in Killeen during the summer. When I first came here, a group of guys and myself, went out to various places to play. It was like our exercise. Yet when the kids’ league began, we had to leave. Over time, we got tired of finding a stable place to play, so my brother, my dad and myself went about building one ourselves.
So you guys constructed Juego Bonito yourselves or did you have help?
We had help. We had people with the proper equipment. But we got in there and got our hands dirty as well.
Is Juego Bonito open to the public?
Absolutely. When we first opened our doors last Christmas, we had an all-male winter league. Then we had a spring, fall and now another winter league. I would love to start a children’s league here someday. So if anyone is interested with their kids playing, just let me know and we can set it up. We also have a co-ed indoor soccer league, as well as a one-on-one clinic for student athletes.
What is your motivation to continue running Juego Bonito with your family?
I love the game of soccer and what it does for the community. You have people who come out for the love of the game, while you have others that come just to watch the game. It’s an overall experience for soccer lovers. Seeing that is what keeps motivating me.
