Seven senior citizens are now official members of a new Bell Choir sponsored by the Harker Heights Senior Recreation Program.

For some of the group, Jan. 28 was their first rehearsal at the Heights First United Methodist Church. For others, it was their second or third time. The choir meets from 2:15 to 3:30 p.m. every Tuesday.

Their director is retired Killeen music teacher Leslie Holman, who was selected for the job by Joyce Mayer, senior activities coordinator and choir member.

“I do the Bell Choir anyway for this church so why not?” Holman said.

The Bell Choir is different from playing in a large brass ensemble or singing in a choir, Holman said. It’s a lot more fun because choir members are close to others making music with the bells.

“It’s not an individual thing. You depend on everyone else and they depend on you,” Holman said.

Jennie Jones joined the bell choir to get out of the house.

“I took piano a couple of years and didn’t do any better at that than I am with this,” she said.

It was the first day of rehearsal for Janet Yznaga.

“I don’t know a thing about music but it’s a challenge and I like it,” she said. “I just came to have fun.”

Choir member JoAnn Hughes has experience playing chimes and as a choir director. “Because the bell choir is new to me, it’s a little more difficult,” she said. “But after a few lessons it will be a real pleasure.”
