Library hosts young authors conference Feb. 22

Young aspiring authors and illustrators interested in writing and illustrating their work can get tips and advice from published authors at the Pencil Productions: Young Authors and Illustrators Conference from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 22 at the Harker Heights Public Library.

Students are invited to spend the morning honing their writing and illustrating skills, meeting published authors and using their creativity.

This year the featured guests are author and illustrator Don Tate and local author Emily C. Martin.

“It’s an opportunity to learn about many different things in the writing and illustrating world,” said Lisa Youngblood, library director.

Tate writes and illustrates children’s books and Martin writes children’s books.

The conference, hosted by the library, is for children in first through sixth grades and is patterned after a program formerly sponsored by the Bell County Reader’s Council, Youngblood said.

“It’s something we started back up. It’s such a great program and we thought we’d reinstate it,” she said of the conference’s second year. “The library has always been really dedicated to promoting writing and writing skills as another way to promote literacy. The two go hand-in-hand.”

Workshops will be available on topics such as self-publishing, illustrating and comic books, mysteries, poetry, humor and fantasy, myths and fairy tales. Cost of the conference is $10 per child. Call 254-953-5491 to sign up.
