Harker Heights Lions Club gathered Nov. 13 at Taqueria Mexico No. 3 in Heights for its regularly scheduled meeting.

Aside from regular agenda items, honors were presented and new eyeglass collection information was provided.

Kris Price was also inducted into the club under the sponsorship of member Ursula Pirtle.

Harker Heights Fire Chief Jack Collier was honored as a charter member and creator of a foundation for the club. He also served two years as president.

Member Gary Tooke displayed newly designed boxes for the collection of used eyeglasses. Founded in 1917, Lions Clubs International is best known for fighting blindness.

“The boxes will be placed in our six schools in Heights and at local businesses,” Tooke said. “The used glasses are collected and sent to Midland to be repaired then shipped to locations around the world.”

The Heights Lions Club provides new glasses specifically for students in the six schools in Harker Heights.

The club has teamed up with the Harker Heights Fire Department to gather donations for the department’s annual Thanksgiving Basket and Santa Pal programs.

Distribution of Thanksgiving baskets to needy families will be Monday at the Harker Heights Fire Station, 401 Indian Trail.

Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 clubs worldwide.
