Sarah Mylcraine

Sarah Mylcraine, 24, is the activities specialist for the Harker Heights Parks and Recreation Department and lives in Heights.

Where are you from?

I grew up in the country of a small farm town in central Illinois.

How long have you lived in Heights?

One year.

What do you enjoy most about living in Heights?

I love how this area has so many great recreational activities. We are surrounded by beautiful hills and lakes which make it great to mountain bike, hike, fish, kayak, camp, and enjoy nature in general.

What inspired you to get into your line of work?

I started school thinking I would like to be a paramedic. Then I realized that I did not want to see people hurt all the time. I wanted to see people happy and enjoying life which led me to my career in parks and recreation.

How long have you been doing it?

I have been in the recreation field for about 2½ years now.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy being able to come up with fun new programs, such as the activities we did for Parks and Recreation Month in July, and then watch them take place. It is so gratifying to watch people be active in our programs, knowing that I helped put that smile on their face.

What or who is an inspiration to you?

My grandparents. They never lost their sense of adventure. They are always traveling together to different campgrounds and learning about different areas, which inspires me, because I love to explore and visit places I have never been before.

Are you involved in any community activities, organizations or clubs?

I am a member of the Greater Killeen Young Professionals, which I really enjoy. It is a lot of fun to attend the events that they put on, and it is a great opportunity to network with other professionals in the community. I am also a member of the National Recreation and Park Association which benefits me as an employee of our Parks and Recreation Department.

Tell me about your family.

I am single with no children.

What is your favorite vacation spot and why?

I have been to many different places, but I cannot say that I have a favorite. Being able to spend quality time with my family on vacation is more important than where we go.

What was the last movie you saw? Favorite TV show?

The last movie I watched was “Monster-in-Law.” My favorite show is “The Amazing Race.”

What was the best advice you were ever given?

I was very athletic growing up, so before all of my games my dad would tell me “Play hard, have fun.” It is a great motto. Play your heart out and be competitive, but not competitive enough that you stop enjoying yourself and forget the reason you started playing in the first place.

If you could change one thing about your life, what would that be and why?

Everything happens for a reason, and past events led me to where I’m at today so I wouldn’t change anything because then I wouldn’t be the person I am now.
