Anyone who digs the music of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s can dance weekly at Harker Heights Event Center’s Throwback Thursdays.
Aug. 22 was the second weekly event, and locals hope it’ll catch on. The evening began with a line-dancing lesson, after which dancers clustered on the floor to test what they learned.
Strobe lights and a disco ball highlighted the crowd’s stylish clothing, while well-placed curtains carved off the dance floor. Austin-based DJ Slim stood in the back corner behind a few wall mirrors. Black and white decorated the entire room.
E Center owner Carolyn Brown said about 150 people attended the event, and most were older than 35.
“We wanted to have something for the older crowd,” she said. “It was a joint venture with the Harker Heights Event Center and T.I.G. Productions.”
Three partygoers said they enjoyed the chance to do something different. Pearl, who heard about the event on 103.1 and brought two of her friends, said it was “a chance to hang out, have a good time and relax. We’re ’70s, ’80s babies!”
On 103.1 Kiss FM, DJs Monica Reid and JJ Jackson promoted the event. Brown said socializing and networking are important components of the event, and she hopes to draw live performers.
Songs last week included One Way’s “Cutie Pie,” released in 1982, and Zapp’s “Mega Medley,” released in 1993. Other highlights included “Outstanding” by the Gap Band and “Got to Give It Up” by Marvin Gaye.
Throwback Thursday is at the E Center in Harker Heights. Happy Hour is from 6 to 8 p.m. and the event lasts until 3 a.m.
