The Harker Heights Fugitive 5K Fun Run is on the horizon.

With $20 preregistration open through Thursday, and race day set for Oct. 12, runners can expect a T-shirt and a fun atmosphere, with proceeds going to fund community programs.

“Proceeds from the race help fund the Blue Santa and the Kiddo Card programs, which help struggling families in the area during the holiday season, and provide cards for parents or guardians to assist in identifying a child if necessary,” said Harker Heights Police Department Community Services Officer Dave Haley, race coordinator.

Now in its 14th year, the Fugitive 5K Fun Run has been a staple of the Harker Heights community.

“Harker Heights has grown so much in population and in the businesses that are located here, that we have seen a steady growth each year of the people coming out and participating in these types of fun events,” Haley said. “Even with the recession the last couple of years, and money being tight, the new businesses have really taken up that slack to help us fund these programs.”

Runners can preregister for the race online at activenet004.active.com/harkerheightspr or in person at the Recreation Center, 307 Miller’s Crossing. Registration on race day will begin at 6 a.m.

Race packets may be picked up starting at 6 a.m. Oct. 12 at the Harker Heights Community Park, 1501 E. Farm-to-Market 2410. The Fun Run starts at 7 a.m.

Awards will be handed out for the overall mail and female winners, along with first through third place medals for males and females in each age group.
