Roger Creager likes his independence.

The Texas country artist from Corpus Christi has turned down four national recording deals to stay underground.

“I’m not sure if that was brilliant,” Creager said. “I was trying to get offers, but I don’t know anymore. I won’t say it’s off the radar, but it’s not something I’m actively pursuing.”

Creager will perform with Michael Carubelli at 7 p.m. today at Whiskey Creek.

“We’re always on tour, we never really stop,” Creager said.

Texas country differs from mainstream country in that the artists, such as Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, don’t follow national trends.

Neither does Creager.

His songs touch on Texas culture and family life, rather than exclusively focusing on the familiar topics of love and alcohol.

“I like a song about inheriting some old guns from my grandparents,” Creager said. “That’s one of my popular songs. The novelty of it is one of the things that people appreciate.”

As young artists get older, songwriting matures, but scrappy attitudes can soften, he said. He works to maintain a sharp edge, the same way Johnny Cash did until he died.

Fans recognize Creager for the high energy he and his five-person band bring to performances, his bio stated.

While Texas hosts about 60 percent of Creager’s performances, the band will tour the Southeast and East Coast in September and October.

“We have a lot of fans in … Harker Heights, Killeen and Temple,” Creager said.

Whiskey Creek is at 171 Farm-to-Market 3219, Harker Heights.
