Harker Heights High School student Brandon Shade, right, accepts congratulations from Heights Rotarian Horace Grace after receiving the Rotary Vocational Scholarship worth $5,250.

Harker Heights Rotary Club members named their 2014 scholarship winner during a regular meeting May 22.

The Heights Club and Rotary District 5870 awarded Brandon Shade, a senior at Harker Heights High School, the club’s vocational scholarship.

The scholarship, totaling $5,250, is awarded to students who plan to attend a vocational school upon graduation.

Shade said he plans to attend Central Texas College and major in computer science with an emphasis in network-administrative. “I then will transfer to (Texas State Technical College) in Waco to finish my degree plan,” he said.

Shade said he found out about the scholarship through a Rotary member.

“I was very interested in applying because I want to succeed in college, and this was my best shot to make it,” he said.

Scholarship program representative Horace Grace said this is the second year the club awarded the scholarship. A student from Ellison High School received the award last year.

There were two applicants from the Heights club this year. District 5870 awards four scholarships each year.

“There were nine scholarship candidates from the district and our candidate was one of the four to win,” Grace said.
