Dustin Free, 18, works at Dylan’s Ice Shack and Café in Harker Heights. He joined the Texas Army National Guard his last year of high school.
How long have you worked at Dylan’s Ice Shack and Café?
I have been working here since it opened in May 10.
What do you think of the Harker Heights area?
I think that it is a pretty good area. The location of the Ice Shack is a great spot because it is right across the street from the Harker Heights High School. The high school kids come here for coffee, ice cream and other snacks and just hang out.
What high school did you graduate from?
I graduated from Salado High School in 2013.
Tell me about your family.
I have a little brother, 11, and a little sister, 16. I was raised by my dad and he is in the Army at Fort Hood. He flies helicopters for the Army. Before he joined the military, he was a police officer. My mother is working on opening her own wine business.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years I see myself graduated from college, becoming an IT and working at Remco or somewhere like that.
What was the best advice you were ever given?
The best advice that I was ever given was from my dad. My dad told me if you’re going to get it done, get it done right. He also told me to join the National Guard.
