The Harker Heights Superhero sports program is expanding to include a bowling league open to all intellectually disabled children between the ages of 5 and 21.

The league will run Dec. 2 through Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. Mondays at Hallmark Lanes in Killeen.

Registration is $40 per child and includes lane fees, shoe rentals and an awards party at the end of the season.

The city will offer financial assistance to participants based on each family’s needs, said recreation superintendent Lori Briere.

“We want to keep it manageable for all of the families,” she said.

The eight-week season will include two games each day. At the bowling party, participants will be awarded medals for their scores and participation, said Karin Ciesiolka, promotions director for Hallmark Lanes.

“I thought it was a great idea and we did everything we could do to accommodate them so they can have some fun,” she said.

The bowling alley is equipped with wheelchair ramps and handicap-accessible equipment for anyone needing assistance, Ciesiolka said.

The Superhero sports program was established in 2010 to encourage exercise and socialization for mentally disabled children and their families within the community.

The program includes several team sports in addition to bowling, archery and rock climbing.

“Our team sports and individual sports allow them to socialize with other families who might be in similar situations. It’s more than just playing the sport it’s actually getting the families together,” Briere said.
