Nichole Broemer, 37, is the recreation and events coordinator for the Harker Heights Parks and Recreation Department.
Where are you from?
I was born in Michigan but my dad joined the military, so we traveled to Germany and Texas most of my life.
How long have you lived in Heights?
I’ve lived in Heights for 13 years but I lived here before then. I graduated from this area, through Killeen ISD, so I’ve been in this area for awhile. I went away for college to Sam Houston State University and lived there for a couple of years, then I moved back.
What do you enjoy most about living in Heights?
It’s a great area to live in. It’s a small-town feel and people get to know each other and the community is very involved, which is important. Our city is diverse because we have people who come and go and we also have retirees here, so it’s good to know your neighbors.
How did you come to work for the city?
I started out as a code enforcement secretary for the city back in 2000 and then I moved to two different departments while working with the city. I went to the public library, and then parks and recreation, and I’ve been here since 2006.
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
I enjoy the excitement that the kids and citizens have at events and programs that we offer. I like that they can come out and enjoy themselves, and the camaraderie that they form with their community.
Are you involved in any community activities, organizations or clubs?
I’m involved in my church, Memorial Baptist in Killeen, with the nursery and the children’s ministry. I volunteer at different places and I’m involved with the Harker Heights Police Academy Alumni Association.
Who or what is an inspiration to you?
Myself and my family are what motivates me. I want to be the best I can be so just having that in mind motivates me to try harder and be a good representative for the city, for my family and for my nephew.
Tell me about your family.
I’m single but I’m a proud aunt of a 10-year-old, Damien, and I have a sister and a mother who are local. Everyone else is out of town.
What is your favorite vacation spot and why?
Las Vegas. My sister gave (the vacation) to me for a Christmas gift and I visited my friend there and I enjoyed it. It was a fun atmosphere and there are just many things to do.
What was the last movie you saw? Book read? Favorite TV show?
The last movie I saw was “Snitch” with The Rock and I’m currently reading the Grimms’ Fairy Tales. I’m also a “CSI: Las Vegas” fan.
What was the best advice you were ever given? Who gave it to you?
My mom said, and this goes for anything, “At least try something once, and if you don’t like it you don’t have to continue.” And that goes with eating something new to trying a new activity. It could be taken in any different path or direction.
If you could change one thing about your life, what would that be and why?
I think when I was younger I would have been more sociable. I had friends and everything but I opened up more in college. So for high school and middle school, I would have been more of a social butterfly and I think I would have had a great time and enjoyed it. Since college, I’ve been a social butterfly and I love it.
