It’s not just a fundraiser; it’s also a good time.

John Hanks hopes people will come out to Walk MS on Saturday in Harker Heights for the food, fun, fellowship and door prizes and then, ultimately, make donations as well.

“We are here to raise money, but registration is free,” Hanks said. “I guarantee if anyone comes out there, they’re going to leave with a door prize.”

Walk MS raises funds for research for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and provides services to individuals impacted by the disease.

Hanks, an Army veteran, is one of those people.

“I was originally diagnosed in 1998, but I didn’t start medication until 2002,” he said.

The Harker Heights’ Walk MS, hosted by the Heart of Texas MS support group, begins at 9 a.m. at Carl Levin Park, 300 Miller’s Crossing. There is no registration fee and no minimum pledge, but awards will be given for funds raised starting at $100.

The walk is one mile long, but there’ll be more than just walking, Hanks said. “We’ll have a clown for the kids and Twisty Balloon Girl will be making balloon-animals. It’s a family event, so bring your dogs.”

Vendors will have information booths at the park, and there’ll be plenty of complimentary food and drinks for walkers.

To register in advance, volunteer or make a donation, go to www.walkmstexas.org. Participants can also register at the park starting at 8 a.m. Saturday. For more information about Walk MS, call Hanks at (254) 681-3452.
