HARKER HEIGHTS — The smile on Melanie McConaghy’s face only got bigger as guests began to arrive at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3892 on Saturday.
To show their appreciation for all the hard work McConaghy accomplished in her year as state president, members of the Ladies Auxiliary held a homecoming in her honor.
“I’m excited and very blessed to see that old friends and new friends took the time out of their busy schedules to spend the day with me,” she said of the more than 275 people in attendance. “It means a lot to have their support and they didn’t have to come here today.”
McConaghy is a member of the Ladies Auxiliary in Harker Heights and is finishing a term as state elected president. She steps down from office in June.
As state president, McConaghy is charged with visiting all 24 districts and every Veterans Affairs hospital in the state. To date she has visited 18.
“We are happy we were able to show her how much we appreciate all that she has done for us and all of her mentorship,” said Pamela Duncan, Ladies Auxiliary president.
“She has made us very proud and we wouldn’t have been able to put this homecoming on if it wasn’t for the help from our Post and comrades.”
In preparation for the event, the group began fundraising and planning in 2011, said trustee Pat Moore.
As a VFW auxiliary member, McConaghy held all the positions and was a chairwoman on all programs.
She also held all elected positions in District 14 as well as chairmanships.
She currently holds the last elected position in the state. She is the third state president from Post 3892.
During her homecoming, McGonaghy received proclamations from Killeen Mayor Dan Corbin and Harker Heights Mayor Rob Robinson as well as the Yellow Rose of Texas proclamation.
James Nier, past president and national commander in chief, was the evening’s guest speaker.
