The race for second place is on in District 8-5A, and Harker Heights is right in the thick of it.

Coming off a 72-69 loss to district unbeaten Ellison, the Lady Knights (16-8, 6-4) have lost two straight games.

But Heights is still well-positioned to earn the second playoff seed in 8-5A despite now being joined at the top by Temple and Killeen, who are tied for second in the standings.

Ellison is the only team that has swept Heights this season, so the Lady Knights, who are also a game ahead of fifth-place Copperas Cove, have as good a shot as any at the second seed if they win out.

And despite the two-game skid, the Lady Knights’ performance against Ellison was a significant improvement from the previous game against Killeen, in which the Lady Kangaroos prevailed, 56-40.

Junior Alexus Dukes nearly equaled the Lady Knights’ total against Killeen by pouring in 30 points while senior Angela DeLaney added 19.

The Lady Knights will look for similar performances when they host Shoemaker tonight as they try to keep up in a district race that is getting tighter by the game.
