Harker Heights Parks and Recreation is hosting the 17th Annual Heights Lights on Parade.

The deadline for free registration for the outdoor lighting/decorating contest is Tuesday.

The contest featured 27 entries for judging last year.

Judging and voting is set for Dec. 12 after 6 p.m.

The contest is divided into four divisions: Division 1-apartment/townhouse/duplex, Division 2-manufactured home, Division 3-single family home (per area), and Division 4-business.

Participants are asked to have their lights on by 5:30 p.m. each evening.

Each division will be judged in two categories: owner decorated and professionally decorated.

Residents can also be a part of the event by voting for their favorite entry.

The People’s Choice Award allows citizens to visit the Parks and Recreation special events website at http://bit.ly/Heightsevents for a list of the entries addresses and see for themselves by viewing the entry by 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12. They can judge on the evenings of Dec. 12 through Dec. 14.

“Once they’ve made their choice, they will return to the website and cast their vote,” said Nichole Broemer, recreation and events coordinator.

Awards will be presented for first and second place and the People’s Choice Award in Divisions 1,2, and 4. In Division 3, there are awards for first, second and People’s Choice per area. The city will be divided into six areas for division three.

“All entries will be judged on “Ahh” factor, number and placement of lights, color and attractiveness, overall theme and total effort,” Broemer said.

A group of volunteer judges will be viewing entries on Dec. 12.

Winners will be contacted by phone and prizes will be available to be picked up at the Recreation Center.

A list of the winning addresses will be listed on the Parks and Recreation website.

Photos of the winners will be used in future brochures and publications and shared with local newspapers.

Visit http://bit.ly/Heightsevents to download a registration form and return that form by no later than Tuesday.

Email the form to: nbroemer@ci.harker-heights.tx.us or fax it to 254-953-5467 or drop it by at the Harker Heights Activities Center, 400 Indian Trail, or the Harker Heights Recreation Center, 307 Miller’s Crossing.
