Before his mother’s recent death, Jarrod Young spoke with her about continuing her volunteer efforts.

A child abuse prevention volunteer and advocate for decades, 62-year-old Teresa Young helped create Aware Central Texas, one of the only nonprofit organizations dedicated solely to preventing child abuse in Central Texas.

Young, now continuing her legacy, will host a barbecue cook-off tournament to raise money for Aware Central Texas. With the help of a few friends, he has created Lone Star Que 4 Kids this year, a charity that raises funds for child abuse prevention in the community.

“According to the Texas Department of Family Protective Services annual data book, there were 1,100 confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect in Bell County alone,” he said.

The event is April 24-26 at Sandy’s Lone Star Events in Nolanville. Friday night, Southern Man Band and Back Roads will play for sponsors and team members, although the concert is open to the public for a $5 donation. Judging is Saturday.

Teams of around four or five members can register to compete in pork, chicken or brisket cook-offs, as well as the margarita and bean competition. There is a $105 “meat” team registration fee, but $100 of the fee goes to charity. The competition is a sanctioned Central Texas Barbecue Association cook-off to ensure sound judging.

Around $4,000 has been set aside for the meat competition prizes, he said, and first through 10th place will receive money and a trophy. There will be a grand champion as well. Winners of the margarita and bean competitions will split a prize jackpot.

“We’ve already raised $7,000 in sponsorships,” Young said. “We hope to give around $5,000 to the charity.”
