The Bell County Museum still has spots available for its second camp of the summer.

The camp for children ages 6 to 8 takes place at the museum from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday through next Friday.

Activities planned for the camp include games, craft activities and a bounty of creative learning opportunities on the Chisholm Trail and pioneers.

Snacks will be provided.

Troy Gray, museum program coordinator, said participants will learn about pioneer games that frontier children played by making corn cob darts. They will use fruit and vegetable dyes for clothing, and see a live Longhorn cow.

“Troy has every detail accounted for, so there’s never a dull moment,” said museum director Stephanie Turnham. “But the pace will be relaxed and easy, so kids can ask questions.”

Gray said next Friday will highlight an archaeological excavation where learners will dig for Civil War replicas.

Young adventurers will learn about geocaching — a treasure hunting game in which participants use GPS devices to find containers — and use these skills and tools to probe history, explore the real world and locate treasure.

Budding historians and museum prodigies will also be asked to build their own exhibits by bringing favorite items from home.

Their displays will mirror a new exhibit at the museum titled, “Our Favorite Things: Staff Selections from the Collection.”

The number of camp participants is limited to 30.

The cost per camper is $30 and includes all activities, crafts and refreshments.

To register, call the museum at (254) 933-5243 or email Troy Gray at troy.gray@co.bell.tx.us.
