Auctioneer Tal Clayter and Naomi Zenhye get the bidding started at a cake auction sponsored by My Brothers Keepers and the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 573 in Harker Heights that raised $870 to help Ellison High School senior Shirley Woods attend culinary school.

More than 22 cakes filled two long tables set up in the poolroom at the Jack D. Levy Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 573 in Harker Heights before a fundraising cake auction started May 30.

By the end of the evening, the tables were bare and the Ladies Auxiliary and My Brothers Keepers had raised $870 to help Ellison High School senior Shirley Woods attend Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Austin.

“I am so very thankful,” Woods said. “These people did not have to do this but they did. Not many people know about groups like this that try to help students.”

The idea for the fundraiser arose when Gregory Hoops, president of My Brothers Keepers, told Vickie Dias, president of the Ladies Auxiliary, about Woods and her desire to attend the culinary arts school.

“I talked with my secretary, Christine Clayter, and we decided it was time to have a cake auction,” Dias said.

The money raised will help Woods pay the deposit on her dorm, with enough left over to buy items for her dorm room.
