Food might be one of the best ways to draw big crowds to fundraisers, said members of the Women’s Auxiliary of Jack D. Levy American Legion Post 573 in Harker Heights.

The most recent event was a June 7 cake auction that raised more than $800 for an Ellison High School senior’s college expenses, but this time it’s called Pickin’ Chix, from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the post, 225 Cox Drive.

People can sample, cook or enter a chicken wing eating contest for $5 each.

The fee allows attendees to sample all the entries before voting for their favorites. There will also be drink specials with proceeds going to the Auxiliary General Fund.

”These funds will assist the auxiliary in continuing the services they provide for veterans and their families,” said co-chair Christine Clayter.

The auxiliary helps disabled and active veterans.

Auxiliary members got the wing-eating idea from a how-to book for monthly fundraisers, said co-chair Naomi Zenhye. “We had never done one using chicken before and we liked the idea,” Zenhye said.

The contest categories are “best creative spicy,” “best creative sweet” and “best overall flavor.” Votes must be cast by 7:30 p.m. Certificates for the winners will be presented at 8 p.m.

Participants are asked to prepare their chicken at home and bring it to American Legion Post 573 no later than 7 p.m. Reservations are not required.

For more information, call co-chairs Christine Clayter at (254) 833-0250 or Naomi Zenhye at (254) 317-2919.
