NOLANVILLE — The First United Methodist Church will host its first barbecue cook-off April 19-20 to raise funds for building projects.
“Our funds have gotten low and we need funds for church repairs and a sign replacement,” said Dorothy Glazener, church secretary. “We just needed a way to raise some money and … we’ve never tried something like this before.”
Glazener contacted the Central Texas Barbecue Association, which gave her instructions for organizing the cook-off. About 20 teams are expected to compete in the event, she said. Entries will be taken through April 19. Attendees will get the opportunity to watch competitors cook brisket, ribs and chicken.
“They don’t sell the barbecue that the cooks will make, because it’s only made to be judged,” she said.
Jay Glazener, church board chairman, said the barbecue will be judged in four specific categories — presentation, texture, aroma and flavor. Winners will earn cash prizes and awards.
“This could develop into something bigger for next year where we could invite vendors to sell food and other items,” he said. “We’re just trying to get this thing organized to run successfully.”
Cooking takes place from noon to 6 p.m. April 19. Judging kicks off at 8 a.m. April 20 at the church, 1910 Old Nolanville Road. Entry fee is $100. To enter, call (254) 698-1700.
