Harker Heights Fitness, Agility, Speed, Sport, Training Camp, or F.A.S.S.T., offers fitness training created to give middle school athletes a leg up on their competition.

The camp, open to girls and boys in sixth through ninth grades, starts Monday and continues every Monday, Wednesday and Friday through Aug. 16.

“It’s a three-week camp designed for middle-schoolers to prep them for their fall seasons by getting them in shape and used to working out in the heat,” said fitness trainer Kim Mansell. “They’re going to hit the ground running in August,”

FAAST is the brainchild of Mansell. She operates the camp through her organization, GetFit Harker Heights. The idea, she said, was inspired by her own child.

“Three years ago my son was getting ready to play football for the first time in school and I knew I had to get him ready for football,” Mansell said. “So I figured if I’m going to put the time in, I might as well be training other kids as well.”

Kids who participate in the camp will benefit from the additional training when looking for spots on a team, Mansell said.

“School sports are now competitive and not everybody plays the same amount of time and not everybody makes the team,” she said.

“So any advantage I can give these kids to beat out their competition or to help them win is my goal.”

Participants will also receive fitness assessments, before and after training, based on their specific skills.

The fee is $75 per child and $50 for each additional family member and must be paid at the time of registration.

Participants can register at the Harker Heights Parks and Recreation office or by going to www.getfit.mymobisite.us/fasst.

They can also sign up by texting the word “GETFIT” to 71441.

Registration is still open and will stay open up until the first day of camp, Mansell said.

F.A.S.S.T. camp will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays through Aug. 16 at the softball fields at Harker Heights Community Park, 1501 E. Farm-to-Market 2410.
