The sign is up, the marquee is lit and the awnings are outstretched for Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers, which opens for business Monday in Harker Heights.

The 3,747-square-foot building is the second area location for the franchise, which opened a restaurant on Clear Creek in Killeen in January.

Locally, the restaurant hired 70 new employees.

“Anytime we get a new business, it’s wonderful,” said Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce President Bill Kozlik. “This will really help to stimulate the economy of Harker Heights.”

The Killeen location had lines going from the register to the front door and drive-thru lanes that spilled out of the parking lot on its opening day, according to Freddy’s owner Keith Alter.

“We will have a grand opening and bring the (original) Freddy out once the dust settles, but after the response we got when we opened the one in Killeen, we just want to focus on giving customers the best Freddy’s experience we can,” he said.

At Freddy’s, frozen custard is such a signature part of the menu that it’s included in the name. But the Freddy’s story doesn’t begin with dessert. It all started with a main course in the 1950s.

“We have a simple menu that is high quality and we really strive to give our customers great hospitality,” Alter said.

The restaurant got its start in Wichita, Kan., from World War II veteran Freddy Simon, now 88. The steakburger is inspired by the 1950s staple and reminiscent of an era focused on quality, cooked-to-order meals that bring families and loved ones together, Alter said.

The Harker Heights Freddy’s is the 98th store to open but the franchise will hit 100 stores before the end of the year.

Freddy’s will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 490 E. Farm-to-Market 2410, Harker Heights.

I sure hope it stays cleaner than the Freddie's on Clear Creek.
Freddie's on CC needs to pay attention to the pick up counter...greasy.
Plus the self-serve soda area sticky.

Usually the food is pretty good. Only on one occasion my food was not great.
My burger was paper thin and burnt around the edges. I took it back and a new burger was cooked...much better.

An establishment that offers great food, customer service and is clean will be one that will have repeat customers.
