Planning and Development Director Fred Morris will talk with Planning and Zoning Commission Chair Larry Robinson and Vice Chair Michael Johnson about target dates for presenting the Harker Heights City Council with an amendment to the zoning ordinance, which could result in redevelopment along Knight’s Way if approved.
No zoning would be changed, said Fred Morris, planning and development director. The city’s land use plan calls for 35 percent of the 1,530 acres along a 2.4-mile stretch of Knight’s Way to be used for business, while 16 percent of the land is currently used for commercial purposes.
Following up on months of workshop discussions, council members and city staff Saturday discussed converting the area in question into a “Main Street.”
To create more of a “street,” rather than “road” feel, the council discussed lowering speed limits, widening sidewalks, and additional controlled landscaping.
Councilman Pat Christ and Mayor Mike Aycock decried the use of 40-foot pole signs.
Aycock favored an incremental approach to Knight’s Way, redeveloping fractionally, rather than a “one-size-fits-all” approach.
While the council agreed that it would need to work with TxDOT for any street construction, Councilman Spencer Smith said the city should develop a vision beforehand, denying TxDOT a possible role in interference.
City planner Jim Scholz discussed the possibility of xeriscaping, a form of landscaping conscious of water use.
The council and staff will continue to discuss redevelopment along the Knight’s Way corridor.
