School and work delays Tuesday morning presented many residents the perfect opportunity to chow down for a good cause.
In honor of National Pancake Day, local IHOP restaurants, including locations in Harker Heights, Killeen, Temple and Waco, offered each guest a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes in a nationwide effort to raise $3 million for Shriners Hospitals for Children.
The Harker Heights restaurant served 193 shortstacks, or 579 pancakes, and was able to collect $1,015 in donations.
“We were planning on coming here during lunch, but since we had a delayed opening we took advantage of the weather and came for breakfast,” said Amanda Orange, an Ellison High School juniors.
“It’s really cool that they are giving away pancakes for such a good cause.”
For every short stack of buttermilk pancakes served, IHOP guests were encouraged to make a voluntary donation to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Chris Saunders, president of the Wes Bell Shrine Club, said 1,500 IHOPs across the country host the fundraiser every year to help Shriners raise money to continue to “provide the best care for children in our specialty areas of orthopedics, burn care, spinal cord injury, and cleft lip and palate, regardless of a family’s ability to pay.”
Saunders said it costs about $2.3 million per day to operate each hospital.
In addition to raising funds, the campaign will raise awareness of Shriners Hospitals for Children, a health care system with 22 locations. Since the first Shriners Hospital opened in 1922, the health care system has improved the lives of more than 1 million children. Last year the restaurant served 4.5 million free pancakes, and pancake lovers donated nearly $3 million to children’s charities.
All of the free pancakes served last year would create a stack nearly 13 miles high.
Since the inception of National Pancake Day in 2006, IHOP has raised nearly $13 million and given away more than 22 million pancakes to support charities in the communities where it operates.
