Alyson Mullins, Kristen Mellberg and Zack Snider rose from their seats at Tuesday’s Harker Heights City Council meeting to receive certificates and gold coins from Mayor Mike Aycock.

The council recognized the Harker Heights High School graduates as founding members of the Knights of the Round Table, a group of students and city officials who organize local entertainment events. (See photo on page 6).

Councilman Pat Christ recounted his experience working with the three students.

“We’ve put on four concerts in the park for students, parents and all adults,” Christ said. “We give new bands an opportunity to come out and have a venue and have an audience and get a chance to really become bands and see what it’s like.”

The well-attended concerts have featured solid talent, Christ said.

“Their enthusiasm, their imagination, their ability to just come up with new and great ideas and to get things going have started this group,” he said.

“We hope (it) will continue over the years to become a good community relationship between the high school and the city of Harker Heights.”

In other business, the council Tuesday approved the purchase of two pickup trucks for the public works department at a total cost of $71,595.

A 1½-ton crane truck and a half-ton truck used for meter reading will replace two older vehicles, said Public Works Director Mark Hyde. The crane truck pumps water and removes wastewater from sewage systems.

The city will pay Philpott Motors in Port Neches $34,848 for the larger truck and Stanley Ford in McGregor $16,978.60 for the smaller one.

During the half-hour meeting, the council also approved the purchase of a $19,769 half-ton extended cab truck for the parks and recreation department. City documents stated Johnson Brothers Ford in Temple will deliver the truck within 70 days.
